Winter Solstice

Skiing in the dark is awesome.

Both images required extensive modification in Photoshop.

Cabin Fever

Had to get out of the house. In spite of the cold, and in spite of my training plan, me and my roommate Elijah went for a run. Good times.

Now I love to make all of my posts as media rich as possible. In this case, I'm including a cell phone picture, and it makes me sad how seriously lacking the quality is. I guess I either need a new phone with a better camera, or a new camera that is ultra-portable. Anyone want to help out in that regard?

Noram#1 Pursuit

I've got work early tomorrow morning, so it's time for a quick and dirty update.

It was an exciting and fun race today. The 12.5km Pursuit race has competitors starting in the position that they finished the previous day. 11 racers and 5 second gaps. Super tight race, and a lot of fun.

The first three racers, Robin Clegg, myself, and Jon Skinstad stacked up shortly after the start and skied the first lap closely together.

Coming in for the first shooting, we're still very close together.

Robin Clegg shows off his Olympic experience by shooting fast and clean, he's the first one out.

I finished shortly after with 1 miss. Jon Skinstad with 2 misses, and Joel Pacas, with 1 miss as well.

Me and my teammate, Joel Pacas, would spend the next 3 laps and 2 shootings skiing side-by-side, and going shot-for-shot in the range. On the last standing shooting, an second miss by me would leave me with one more penalty loop than Joel, giving him the win. A super tight race, and the unpredictability is what makes the sport so exciting.

Again, huge thanks to Sylvain Beaudry for taking pictures. He's a champ.

Now it's time for bed.

NorAm Cup #1/Calforex Cup #1

The first biathlon race of the season was today. A 10km Sprint format, it follows the Nordic Center's 3.3km loop. I gotta say, that loop is a killer. You spend a kilometer enjoying some rolling terrain and a delightful descent into the lowest elevation trails - then 2km hauling your butt out. What a climb.

It was an excellent race, though. The key to a successful race on the 3.3km loop is control. It's easy to go just a touch too hard at the beginning, and once you get into that slight energy deficit, it's impossible to recover during the rest of the climb - you end up slow and in a world of hurt.

Today I was able to stay disciplined and control my pace. This lead me a to a second place finish with a comfortable lead over the rest of the field. Tomorrow is a pursuit format, which means you start in the order you finish. Great starting position for what will hopefully be another great race.

Mad props to Sylvain Beaudry for coming out and taking pictures. It's sincerely appreciated.
